The Power of Aroma: How Terpenes have gone Mainstream

What You Need to Know: Just like the characters in Game of Thrones, terpenes are a diverse and complex group of organic compounds that contribute to the overall story of hemp.

The Big Picture: There are over 100 different terpenes in the hemp plant, each with unique properties and potential therapeutic benefits that provide distinctive aroma and flavors.

If you have smelled or tasted a lime, then you have experienced a terpene

Terpenes have gone mainstream in recent years, because of the growing interest in the potential therapeutic benefits of cannabis and hemp products. Terpenes are naturally occurring compounds found in these plants that handle their distinctive aromas and flavors, as well as some of their potential health benefits.

Common terpenes include:

  • Myrcene: A terpene that provides a musky and earthy aroma. Myrcene is reported to have anti-inflammatory and sedative properties that may enhance the effects of other cannabinoids. For a Deep Dive into Myrcene terpene click here.

  • Limonene: As the name suggests, limonene has a citrusy aroma and is reported to have anti-anxiety, anti-depressant, and anti-inflammatory properties.

  • Pinene: Found in both hemp and pine trees, pinene has a pine-like aroma and is reported to have anti-inflammatory and bronchodilator properties.

  • Linalool: A terpene with a floral aroma, linalool is reported to have sedative and calming effects and may also have anti-inflammatory properties.

  • Caryophyllene: With a spicy aroma, caryophyllene is unique in that it may act as a cannabinoid, binding to the same receptors as cannabinoids like CBD. It is reported to have anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties.

  • Humulene: A terpene that provides an earthy, woody aroma. It’s reported to have anti-inflammatory and appetite-suppressing properties.

By identifying and isolating specific terpenes, researchers and product developers are creating terpene-infused products with targeted effects and applications.

How are terpenes used?

Terpenes are used naturally in CPG products as flavorings, fragrances, natural solvents and degreasers, and in health and wellness products, such as aromatherapy products, dietary supplements, and cannabis products.

How Hemp-based Terpenes are Unique

Hemp-based terpenes differ from terpenes found in other plants in their unique combination and concentration of terpenes and other compounds specific to the hemp plant, as well as their legality under federal law, making them a popular and legal option for those seeking the potential therapeutic benefits of terpenes.

Consumer are increasing their interest in natural and plant-based remedies. The demand for terpene-infused products is growing. As technology advances, more efficient and sustainable methods of extracting and using terpenes are also likely to emerge.
